Wishes for success or demands that trouble – light and dark shades of expectations


     A desire that attracts, a hope that delights, a wish that brightens, an aspect that pulls – expectations enter and exit our lives quite often. As we march along the journey of life, while ascending different stages on the way; we encounter these aspects of expectations. Though one cannot judge about the significance of expectations or declare them as beneficial or harmful, they continue to influence our life in one way or the other. Expectations created with an aim to equate our assets, engagements, possessions and lifestyle with those around can never take us towards happiness; while those framed with the view of improving ourselves can motivate us towards success. Unrealistic expectations and impossible desires can offer more harm than good, distracting us from our real goals in life.

     While expectations can act as finish lines, driving us to excel; unnecessary focus over them can pressurize us in the long run. Enjoying the process of hard work with determination, dedication and devotion appears more fruitful. Adding stress, burden, deadlines and end points of expectations can take away the joy of the journey. Expectations created by ourselves for our own growth, progress, prosperity and development can act as inspirational factors, while those framed by people around may trouble as undesired elements. As inner happiness is the key to long-lasting peace and satisfaction, devising our own road map for the future ahead is certainly important by all means.

   Deciding our activities under the influence of expectations may turn into a burden for lifetime. As we enter into the rat race of fulfilling expectations of others, we unknowingly invite disappointment, defeat, sorrow and anxiety. A never ending process without any limitations, drawing an end to expectations is definitely impossible. With this, as mounting expectations cast their spell, balancing their load turns into a difficult task. Framing goals, planning futuristic aspects, deciding tasks and executing them are essential engagements that need our attention. Amidst these necessary commitments, chasing expectations and striving for them may not help us in the long run. While we may toil and fulfil one expectation for others, several other contents may enter into the list.

      Besides expectations about major events in life, materialistic aspects can also come under its influence. Rising expectations about wealth, property, luxuries and assets can drive us towards greed. Divided by a thin line, greed and expectations should be handled with care. Drawing satisfaction and happiness from every achievement can shower us with happiness.

    In the domain of personal relationships, expecting contribution from others, while not adding our own inputs can lead to failure and disappointment.

  5. Expectations about assets, wealth and possessions may never end, pulling us towards more desires. Planning our necessities well and designing a road map for ourselves can yield success.


    With these aspects in mind, we must realize the real essence of expectations and implement them for our benefit. Keeping disappointment, hatred, anxiety and sadness at bay, expectations should be able to radiate satisfaction.

   So whether, expectations come across as wishes or demands, balancing it for our good is the key to long-lasting happiness!
