If you are trying to lose weight keeping a daily food journal (or log) is a great idea. When you write down your daily food/drink intake you are more aware of what you are eating, how many calories you consume and where exactly they are coming from.

Some tips on keeping a food journal:

  • Write down what you eat as soon as you do it, rather than waiting to do it at the end of the day. This way you will know exactly how many calories you have consumed and how many you have left in a day so you don’t go over your daily goal.
  • Always focus on portion sizes. Use measuring cups, measuring spoons, or food scales to serve the right amounts of the foods you are about to eat.
  • Don’t skip little treats especially if your body is asking for them. Rather indulge a little with portions in mind which will be better in a long run than if you cut out certain foods all at once. Remember to log them in no matter how many calories they have.
  • Cook at home as many meals as you can doing the week. You’ll have more control over what you are eating and what exactly is in the food you eat. Plus this will help you to have a more detailed entry in your food journal.

And remember that it doesn’t matter what kind of journal you have (regular notebook, fancy diary or journal, online log, printable daily food log) as long as you use it.
