  • Make a commitment to exercise on the elliptical trainer 4 times a week for at least 30 minutes.
  • Keep the exercise interesting by choosing the pre-programmed exercise routines already set on your elliptical trainer.
  • Incorporate interval training into your workout. If your elliptical has a pre-programmed routine for intervals, use this mode. If not, you can create your own interval workout by varying your incline and resistance throughout your workout.

  • Maintain proper form on the elliptical trainer. Protect your body by keeping your shoulders relaxed and your knees in line with your ankles. Avoid holding excess tension in your arms, hands, shoulders, neck and back.
  • Work your core. Keep your abdominal muscles up and in, thereby supporting your lower back with them.
  • Wear a heart rate monitor while you exercise. Some elliptical trainers have heart rate sensors on the machine that you can grasp with your hands. If yours doesn’t, invest in an affordable heart rate monitor.
  • Add more resistance into your workout. You don’t have to worry about building bulky muscles on the elliptical trainer. The extra resistance will just help to increase your calorie burn and tone your muscles.
