The Dollar Store What to Buy and What Not to

We all love a good deal, but not everything at Dollar Stores is worth buying! And not all Dollar Stores are created (priced) equally. The Dollar Tree charges a dollar for every item but Dollar General offers pricier stuff, too.

Items Worth Buying at Dollar Stores:

  1. Cleaning products are worth buying at Dollar Stores. You can find name brands in most, but even if you don’t the generic brands are made with same ingredients and you get the same thing in the end, only you pay less for it.
  2. Shampoo and other bath items are worth buying at Dollar Stores. Off-brand shampoos, toothpastes, shaving cream, deodorant, and other bath items are usually just as good as the name brands, and you can save big.
  3. Greeting cards are worth buying at Dollar Stores. Cards are often priced two for a dollar, so they’re a real steal.
  4. Spices are worth buying at Dollar Stores. You may not find the most exotic selection at Dollar Stores, but for the size and amount of essential spices you will love the price and savings compared to the other stores. Just always remember to check for expiration dates.
  5. Bottled and packaged foods are worth buying at Dollar Stores. You can get great deals on pickles, olives, salsa, and other bottled, tinned, packaged, and long-lasting items.
  6. Picture frames are worth buying at Dollar Stores. Dollar Stores carry a wide selection of frames, which make great gifts when paired with a family photo. Inspect the frames carefully before purchasing.
  7. Movie night or Halloween candy is worth buying at Dollar Stores. Movie theater concessions are so overpriced that it’s easy to spend more on popcorn and candy than on the tickets themselves. Which is why movie night at home is a great idea. Many Dollar Stores will have 2 for $1 promotions and it’s great way to stock up for Halloween and movie night candy.
  8. Seasonal stuff is worth buying at Dollar Stores. Stocking stuffers and home decorations will cost you 30 to 70 percent less at dollar stores than at party supply or drug stores.
  9. Grooming items are worth buying at Dollar Stores. Hair elastics, headbands, barrettes, and other grooming products are generally a great deal at dollar stores. Sometimes you can even find brand name products, such as Ivory soap, Lady Speed Stick deodorant, or Gillette shaving cream.
  10. Food storage containers are worth buying at Dollar Stores. These plastic tubs will generally cost you 30 percent less at dollar stores than at discount retailers like Walmart and Target.
  11. Socks are worth buying at Dollar Stores. They offer great deals on packages of socks for men, women and kids.
  12. Nail polish and some makeup are worth buying at Dollar Stores. In most Dollar Stores you can find 2 nail polishes in a package for a dollar which is a great find, especially if they are name brand like Revlon. Lipstick for a dollar is also a particularly good bargain. A Revlon lipstick, for example, usually costs $7.99 at a drug store. Eye shadows and liners are also usually good buys, but skip the foundation unless you can find a brand you already use. Cheap foundations can cause skin problems, and most expire after a year.
  13. Dishcloths are worth buying at Dollar Stores. These cost at least $1 less at Dollar Stores than at grocery and other kitchen supply stores.

What Not to Buy at Dollar Stores:

  1. Toys are not worth buying at Dollar Stores. Most kids are rough on their toys.Invest in higher quality toys that will last to reduce the damage to your wallet in the long run.
  2. Batteries are not worth buying at Dollar Stores. Batteries purchased at dollar stores often wear out quickly. Ultimately, you end up spending more by having to replace the batteries more often.
  3. Vitamins and medications are not worth buying at Dollar Stores. Medications and vitamins at Dollar Stores may be unregulated and mislabeled. Consumer Reports found that multi-vitamins sold at dollar stores didn’t always have the amount of nutrients claimed on the label.
  4. Paper products are not worth buying at Dollar Stores. Paper towels, toilet paper, and tissues tend to be of the flimsy, single-ply variety. Plus, you can usually find them cheaper at your grocery store.
  5. Drinks are not worth buying at Dollar Stores. A liter of soda for a dollar is not a bargain when you can get two liters for a dollar at your local grocery store.
  6. Plastic and aluminum wraps are not worth buying at Dollar Stores. Off-brand cling film from Dollar Stores doesn’t tend to cling. And while dollar store aluminum foil tends to work pretty well, it’s cheaper to buy it in bulk.
  7. School supplies are not worth buying at Dollar Stores. They have decent deals, but you aren’t really saving much over what you can find at larger chain stores.
  8. Baking soda is not worth buying at Dollar Stores. For the best deal shop warehouse stores such as Costco or Sam’s Club for this item.
  9. Pet food is not worth buying at Dollar Stores. Knock-off food just isn’t worth the risk. To ensure the safety of your pet’s food, shop at national chains that tend to have good safety procedures in place. And deals can be found on cases of name brand foods at the national chains that are better than the deals you’ll find at a Dollar Store.
  10. Power cords and strips are not worth buying at Dollar Stores. Power cords, power strips, or extension cords are often shoddily made and can damage electronics.
  11. Oven mitts are not worth buying at Dollar Stores. Though priced 30 to 40 percent less than at most other stores, dollar store mitts are poorly constructed and offer less protection for your hands. Better shop elsewhere for this item.
  12. Cotton swabs are not worth buying at Dollar Stores. The cotton swabs are so flimsy that they bend in half when you try to use them, or have too little cotton on the ends.
  13. Knives are not worth buying at Dollar Stores. The blades of cheap knives are also thinner and bend more easily, making it difficult to do precision slicing and easy to hurt yourself. Spend a bit more for quality knives elsewhere.
