Meaningful Within Your Means (Part 3)

Happy New Year! What is your best holiday memory from this year? Learn any lessons? In hindsight, did you really need a new outfit for every party? A little too generous with the gift-giving?

The holiday hangover is among us and hopefully not driving your New Year’s resolutions.

For us personally this holiday season was pretty stress free thanks to planning and budgeting with SunTrust Bank. We were able to step back and leave behind the whole hustle and bustle and enjoy time with our kids, family and friends.

One thing we learned this year is, that it’s not about gifts, big parties and spending a lot of money, but about memories and traditions you create with those you love. We made sure our kids will remember the time we spent together far longer than the gifts received.

Now that holiday season is behind us it’s time to set our New Year’s resolutions. Goals we hope to reach this year. I don’t really set many goals or resolutions, for me I see it as improving on the lifestyle we already lead in our household.

  • I hope to involve our kids in more healthy activities, ones that don’t cost us money, but are fun and good for us.
  • Another goal I have for this year is for us to move to a larger house. Nothing too big, but with just enough room to accommodate the four of us, because the current one is more comfortable for two to three people.
  • We already eat healthy in our house, but I would like for us to keep doing that too when we are outside of our home as well.
  • And like many of you to save money!

To help us reach our goals we are using the SunTrust Bank’s Money Personality Quiz as a fun way to lead us in the right direction to better money habits in 2015.

What are your goals and resolutions for 2015?

Want to pay off debt this year? Save more money? Eat better? Exercise more? We tend to use the end result as the resolution when really; your resolutions should be changes to behaviors that will get you there.

For example:

Pay off debt? Resolution – set up an auto payment from every paycheck that day you get paid. The money is taken out right away before you even have a chance to realize it’s there. By setting up smaller auto payments vs. one payment on the due date you can save on interest and actually pay off quicker.

Save more money? We get it, saving is hard. Over 70% of Americans live paycheck to paycheck. Resolution – Find one thing to either eliminate or find savings in your budget. Can you eliminate premium channels from cable and save $30 a month? Have way more data than you need on your mobile plan? Cut that down and save $25 a month? Take whatever savings you can find, even if its $5 and set up a monthly auto transfer of that amount into your savings. TIP: Use Mobile/Online Banking? Remove your savings account from your accounts view so you are not staring at the money sitting there…tempting you. Out of sight, out of mind.

This year think a little differently. Share with us Do you have any tips to share that can lead to resolution success? For more ideas visit #holidaymeans!

Meaningful Within Your Means (Part 2)

At SunTrust Bank Their Purpose is Lighting the Way to Financial Well Being

It’s about depositing hope, instead of checks. And withdrawing stress, instead of cash.

This year thanks to SunTrust Bank we are doing the holidays a bit different than we are use to. Sure our house is decorated as every other year and we are going to have presents under our tree, but we are focusing more on each other and on our family traditions than on how many gifts we got.

Over the years we have forgotten the joy of the holidays and the little things that matter more than the whole hustle and bustle. Instead of doing the holidays the way we remember them as kids my husband and I have focused more on the entertaining, presents and things that only stress us more and leave us not doing the only thing that matters… Enjoying the season with our kids.

This year for the first time we are family of four and we want to make new traditions with our kids. Traditions that they will remember when they grow up and maybe even continue with their families.

We already started by planning our holidays and spreading our budget wisely with help from SunTrust Banks Holiday Budget Plan and their Holiday Planning Guide.

We also started a new tradition of baking delicious desserts every week as a family to make the holiday season feel more sweet. And this also gives us an opportunity to spend time with our kids in an joyful environment that definitely is as sweet as the treats we are making. We take this time to talk, share, enjoy and while making memories for us we also make sweet gifts for our family, friends and neighbors. That way we know that we can make someone else’s day and holiday season more special than it is already.

Another thing we have been enjoying this holiday season is watching holiday movies and drinking homemade hot cocoa. Our 9 year-old daughter has been enjoying this new tradition a lot. She loves holidays and recently she said that “spending time with her parents and little brother is only making the season more perfect and special”.

Although every year we donate, this year we decided to make our daughter do the donating herself. She felt very good while donating her toys and clothing to those in need. I think this new tradition definitely made her feel like she was doing something bigger, better and is one we’ll continue for years to come.

What is next for us? We are going to make homemade gifts for our family, friends and neighbors like hot cocoa mix in a jar, homemade cookies, hand painted picture frames, hand knitted scarf’s… We are also planning a holiday party, but this year we are leaving the stress behind and focusing on enjoying the time with our loved ones.

This year think a little differently. Share with us How are you going to make this holiday season more special for your family? How can you be more meaningful within your means? For more ideas visit #holidaymeans!
