What is MSPI

What is MSPI & How it Affects You and Your Baby

Milk soy protein intolerance (MSPI) is a temporary inability to digest the proteins found in cow’s milk and soy products. MSPI is different from a traditional food allergy. You may also see it referred to as food protein-induced colitis or cow’s milk protein intolerance (CMPI). It may be related to other diagnoses, including eosinophilic gastroenteritis/ esophagitis, or allergic colitis.

Around baby boy’s 2 month checkup we discovered that he has MSPI. He was diagnosed because he had several symptoms like green, blood and mucous in his stools, skin rash and he was pretty fussy around feeding time. Now since I’m breastfeeding this meant a lot of changes in my food choices like a diet free of all dairy and soy. Of course this sounds much easier than it is. Quickly I learned just how many foods I’ll have to avoid because hidden dairy and soy are just about everywhere.

After dairy and soy elimination diet some symptoms persisted like skin rash and mucous in stools. That’s when I realized that he was sensitive to other foods next to dairy and soy. For a while we also had to avoid all top allergens and some extras like meat, beans, rice, oatmeal and some fruits and veggies.

My diet quickly turned into eating a lot of fruits, vegetables, quinoa, food made on extra virgin olive oil, all seasoned with salt and pepper only. Our safe foods were (in case I messed up and consumed unknowingly one of his triggers) bananas, watermelon, grapes, raisins, avocado, lettuce, cucumbers, zucchini, spinach, potatoes and quinoa. Over time I learned how to avoid all triggers and how to stop craving foods I couldn’t have.

He is 5 months now and we haven’t had any symptoms or triggers in a while. Now we are slowly adding back in foods from his trigger list and so far we had luck with pork, corn, tomatoes and strawberries. We had mixed responses from chicken and rice so we decided to avoid it a bit longer.

Baby boy is thriving on this diet and is all around a happy baby. As for me I’ve lost a lot (and I really mean a LOT) of weight (we are talking 35 pounds in 3 months). So far my doctor is not concerned and thinks that this unplanned diet change was good for me, because next to weight loss I’m also feeling better, my skin has cleared completely and my migraines are gone.

I will continue eating this way for as long as I’m breastfeeding. I breastfeed my daughter for 12 months and I’m hopping to do the same this time around, maybe even longer if his sensitivities continue. I will slowly add in foods as his system starts to tolerate them.

Please Note – This diet is not for everyone. My circumstances forced me to go on this dietary change for well-being of my baby and I am glad that it helped both of us. But you have to consult with your doctor before cutting out any foods from your diet. Both my baby and I see our doctors regularly to make sure we are both well and not deficient of any vitamins or minerals.

Gestational Diabetes

Gestational Diabetes – What It Is – How to Treat It

Gestational diabetes is high blood sugar (diabetes) that starts or is first diagnosed during pregnancy.

Gestational Diabetes

During pregnancy – usually around the 24th week – many women develop gestational diabetes. A diagnosis of gestational diabetes doesn’t mean that you had diabetes before you conceived, or that you will have diabetes after giving birth. But it’s important to follow your doctor’s advice regarding blood glucose (blood sugar) levels while you’re planning your pregnancy, so you and your baby both remain healthy.

I was diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes at 32 weeks pregnant with my last pregnancy. At first I didn’t know anything about it, or how I will manage to keep it under control. But luckily with help of my doctor and dietitian I was able to manage my Gestational Diabetes with diet only without any medications. Once baby was born my diabetes was gone and both baby and I were doing well.
