French toast, also known as eggy bread or gypsy toast, is a dish of bread soaked in beaten eggs and then fried.

When French toast is served as a sweet dish, milk, sugar, vanilla or cinnamon are also commonly added before pan-frying, and then it may be topped with sugar (often powdered sugar), butter, fruit, or syrup. When it is a savory dish, it is generally fried with a pinch of salt, and can then be served with a sauce such as ketchup or mayonnaise.

Warm Maple and Raisins French Toast

Warm Maple and Raisins French Toast

Ingredients:

2 tablespoons sunflower oil

2 large eggs

1 cup milk

1 tablespoon sugar

1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

10 slices of bread (makes 5 servings, 2 slices per serving)

1/2 cup raisins (for serving)

Maple Syrup (for serving)

Directions:

In a large bowl whisk eggs with sugar and vanilla extract. After the eggs are well beaten add in milk. Whisk until well combined.

In a 10 inch or 12 inch skillet, add 1 tablespoon sunflower oil and heat it over medium heat. Dip bread in egg mixture. Fry slices until golden brown, then flip to cook the other side.

Depending on your skillet and bread slices you may have 2 batches. After the first batch is done, lower the heat and add remaining tablespoon of oil and repeat the process by dipping the bread in egg and frying it until golden brown on both sides. Divide French Toast in serving plates.

In a small saucepan heat maple syrup and raisins over low heat. You don’t want the syrup to bubble, but rather get warm and less thick. When heated pour the syrup and raisins over the French Toast and enjoy right away with milk, coffee or drink of choice.
